Capacitor
Switch Analysis
In addition to determining directivity, the new algorithm in 4400 firmware V2.0 is also
able to detect if 3-phase voltage and current waveforms experience a capacitor
switching event. The result of the analysis is displayed in the Event Text Detail screen.

The following transient event
types - bipolar, ocillatory, or
capacitor switch - will include
text detail on capacitor switch
analysis and directivity (when
detected). This capacitor
switching event is generated only
in 3-phase voltage and current
waveforms.
Press Text to display the event
threshold values and textual
summary. The text summary will
display the following
characteristics to describe the
capacitor switching event.
• The type of the event whether it
is Normal, Back-to-back, or
Re-strike.
• The direction of the probable
location of the switching
capacitor whether it is
Upstream or Downstream
from the monitoring point.
