5.5 Terminating the Interceptor Cable
For effective operation of the Interceptor cable, it is essential that it is correctly
connected and terminated using the proper junction boxes and connectors.
5.5.1 Cable-Stripping Procedure
Whenever the cable is to be connected to a terminal block, whether at the End-of-Line
or at a Junction Box, the following procedure should be followed to prepare the cable
for termination ...
Using a sharp knife, remove about 40mm of the outer jacket of the sensor
cable;
Peel away the mylar tape and/or foil screen;
Remove the two exposed strips of magnetic core material and cut back the
central strain wire;
Using a sharp knife, strip back 12mm of the lubritube sleeving, being careful not
to pull on the loose conductors.
Great care should be taken to avoid pulling on the loose conducting wires which move
very freely within their “Lubritube” sleeves, and a knife should always be used for the
stripping of these sleeves. If cutters or strippers are used, it is extremely easy to pull
several metres of wire out of the sleeve accidentally, resulting in the conductor
disappearing into the cable at the other end! If this happens on a short length of sensor
it may be possible to push the conductor gently back into the sleeving so that it
reappears at the other end of the cable, but this will be impractical with any substantial
length, and the cable will then be unusable.
It is also important that the cable be attached to the fence before it is stripped back
and connected to any terminal block in order to avoid the possibility of the conductors
being pulled out of their sleeves as the cable is manipulated.
5.5.2 End-of-Line Termination
In order to detect any sabotage or failure of the
Interceptor cable, the Electronic Signal Processing
equipment monitors its integrity continuously by
applying a DC voltage.
For this monitoring system to function properly, a
particular End Of Line (EOL) Termination box
must be present at the far end of the cable from
the electronics.
The box containing the EOL Termination should
be attached to the fence using the supplied fixing
bars. The Interceptor cable should be passed
through the gland and connected to the terminal
block inside the box. The gland should be
tightened to create a good seal, and the lid should
then be re-attached taking care that the lever of the microswitch is correctly operated
by the lid closing and opening. The microswitch is used to disconnect the EOL
termination when the lid is removed, allowing the system to detect that the end-of-line
box has been opened - if care is not taken the metal lever can become bent and so
cease to operate the microswitch correctly.
