8 Power, Connector and Environmental Specifications
8.1 Fibre Ethernet
The Gthernet Ring uses industry-standard multimode or single mode 2-core optical
fibre. The maximum run for a single length of optical fibre (that is, the maximum fibre
length between two adjoining Comanders) is normally about 1.5Km, but this may
depend on other device connections – for detailed guidance on the optical budget for
Comander devices, contact Geoquip Technical Support.
The fibre connection sockets on the Comander rear panel are made using “SC” fibre-
optic connectors. These must be fitted to the fibre using specialist tools, which are
available from Corning Cable Systems.
Please see the documentation supplied with the tools for detailed instructions on how
to terminate the fibre and fit the connectors. When installing fibre, it is essential that
proper tools and techniques are used, but these are beyond the scope of this manual –
please see a Fibre Installer Handbook or reference guide.
8.2 CAT5e Ethernet Cable & Connectors
CAT5e cable connections should be made using “Pulsejack” RJ45 plugs. To comply
with Comander's temperature range requirements, all cables and connectors must be
specified to industrial standard, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
The maximum length of CAT5e connections specified for Comander systems is 100m.
To operate reliably over distances close to this limit, high-quality cables and connectors
should always be used. If the location of the cable is subject to large amount of
electromagnetic noise, this may affect the maximum distance for cable runs, and the
real bandwidth which can be achieved for reliable connections.
8.2.1 RJ45 plug and CAT5e cable connections
Copper network connections within a Comander system must always be made using
standard CAT5e straight-through cables. These can be wired using either 568A or
568B pin layout, but both ends of the cable should use the same pin layout.
