6.5 Ladder-Controlled CAN Communication
Using Put and Get Network Words function blocks, the CAN 1 port can exchange digital and
analog global data with other XLE/XLT or OCS/RCS devices (nodes) attached to the CAN
network.
In addition, Put and Get Network Heartbeat function blocks allow nodes on the CAN network to
regularly announce their presence and to detect the presence (or absence) of other nodes on
the network.
6.6 Using CAN for I/O Expansion (Network I/O)
Connecting Network I/O devices (SmartStix, SmartMod, SmartBlock, SmartRail) to the XLE/XLT
CAN 1 port, allows the XLE/XLT I/O to be economically expanded and distributed. A variety of
XLE/XLT remote I/O modules are available for this purpose.
