3592 tape drives
This section describes the 3592 tape drives.
There are three generations of 3592 tape drives: TS1130 (Models E06 and EU6), TS1120
(Model E05), and J1A. The TS1130 tape drive offers the same features of the TS1120 tape
drive, along with the following additional enhancements:
An energy-saving cooling fan motor speed (Model E06 only)
Increased tape cartridge native capacities
Increased data rate
Increased linear and track densities
Note: The 3592 EU6 tape drive is a 3592 E05 tape drive canister upgraded to contain a
Model E06 drive through the MES (Miscellaneous Equipment Specification) process. The EU6
model name is only used when information specific to the Model EU6 is discussed.
Data encryption is a feature offered by the TS1120 and TS1130 tape drives. You can order a
TS1120 tape drive with encryption capability or upgrade a Model E05 canister to include
encryption capability. All TS1130 tape drives are encryption capable. For information about
encryption-capable drives and media, encryption enablement, and encryption-key
management,
Like the TS1120 tape drive, the TS1130 has dual-port, 4–Gbps native switch fabric Fibre
Channel interfaces. The 3592 J1A tape drive offers the same but at a 2–Gbps rate. These
features offer flexibility in an Open Systems environment because the drives can directly
attach to Open Systems servers with Fibre Channel attachments. Additional enhancements
of the TS1130 tape drive are shown in Table 1.
All 3592 tape drives include an RS-422 library interface port for communication with the
TS3500 Tape Library. The 3592 tape drives use the Statistical Analysis and Reporting
System (SARS) to isolate failures between media and hardware.
A 3592 tape drive cannot read or write to a 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape (media
type J) or to a 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape (media type K).
Table 1 shows the basic features of each generation of the 3592 tape drive.
