Create a Virtual Machine
Creating a virtual machine is similar to building a computer. After creating a virtual machine, a guest
operating system must be installed with applications and VMware* Tools* on it. Ensure an ISO image and a
license for the operating system to install on the virtual machine are available. To create a virtual machine,
perform these steps:
1) In the Inventory panel, select the host machine.
2) Click “Create a new virtual machine” in the Getting Started tab.
3) Select “Typical”, then click “Next”.

4) Type a virtual machine name, then click “Next”.
5) Select a datastore to store the virtual machine files in, then click “Next”. The datastore must be large
enough to hold the virtual machine and its virtual disk files. In this example, VMStore1 is used.
6) Under Guest Operating System, select the operating system family (Microsoft Windows*, Linux*, Novell
NetWare*, Solaris*, or other) and select the version from the drop-down list. This is the virtual machine’s
operating system. Base the choice on the planned use of the virtual machine. In this example, Windows
Server* 2003 Enterprise Edition is used because it is the OS version used for the demo.
Note: The wizard does not install the guest operating system. The New Virtual Machine wizard uses
this information to select appropriate default values, such as the amount of memory needed.
7) Specify the size of the virtual disk, then click “Next”. Enter the disk size in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes
(GB). The default is 8 GB. The virtual disk must be large enough to hold the guest operating system and
