NOTE: Arrow indicates direction of travel.
Step cutting occurs when grass is cut taller on one side of
a cutting unit than the other or on one side of mower to
the other. This is usually caused by mechanical wear or
an incorrect roller or deck caster adjustment.
Probable Cause Remedy
HOC (height-of-cut) settings are different from one side of a
cutting unit to the other or from one cutting unit to another.
Check HOC adjustment of cutting units. (Refer to “Safety,
Operation, and Maintenance Manual.”)
Worn roller bearings or deck caster wheels. Check/replace roller bearings (See “Deck Roller” on page 8-31.)
and/or deck caster wheels. (See “Deck Caster Wheels” on
page 8-30.)
Cutting unit movement is restricted. Check/remove cutting unit movement restriction.
Variations in turf density Change mowing direction.
Machine ride height is uneven side to side. Check/adjust proper tire inflation pressure. (Refer to “Safety,
Operation, and Maintenance Manual.”)
Cutting unit height is uneven side to side. Check/adjust for even mower weight distribution. (See “Weight
Transfer Circuit” on page 4-57.)
Mower frame is bent. Repair or replace as needed.
