Thischapterprovidesinformationaboutturningonandturningofftheserver.

Turningontheserver

Theservercanbeturnedoninoneofthefollowingways:

•Afteryouﬁnishunpackingandsettinguptheserver,connectittoanacpowersource.Pressthepower

buttononthefrontofthechassistoturnontheserver.Theserverneedsabout30secondsforthe

ThinkServerManagementModule(TMM,alsoknownasBMC)toinitializewheneveryouconnectthe

servertoanacpowersource.Ifyoupressthepowerbuttonduringthisperiod,theserverwillnotstart

immediately;itwillstartaftertheTMMinitializationﬁnishes.

•WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabledontheserverthatisconnectedtoanacpowersourceanda

LAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnonorwakeuptheserverfromamanagementconsole

usingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.

•YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoturnontheserverthroughthemanagementLANremotely.

Turningofftheserver

CAUTION:

Thepowercontrolbuttononthedeviceandthepowerswitchonthepowersupplydonotturnoff

theelectricalcurrentsuppliedtothedevice.Thedevicealsomighthavemorethanonepower

cord.Toremoveallelectricalcurrentfromthedevice,ensurethatallpowercordsaredisconnected

fromthepowersource.

Theservercanbeturnedoffinoneofthefollowingways:

•Turnofftheserverfromtheoperatingsystemifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.Afteran

orderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystem,theserverwillturnoffautomatically.Forinstructionsonhow

toshutdownyourspeciﬁcoperatingsystem,refertotherelateddocumentationorhelpsystemfor

theoperatingsystem.

•Pressthepowerbuttononthefrontofthechassistostartanorderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystem

andturnofftheserver,ifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.

•Ifyourserverstopsrespondingandyoucannotturnitoff,pressandholdthepowerbuttononthefront

ofthechassisforfoursecondsormore.Ifyoustillcannotturnofftheserver,disconnectallpower

cordsfromtheserver.

•IftheserverisconnectedtoaLAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnofftheserverfroma

managementconsoleusingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.

•YoualsocanusetherelatedTMMfeaturetoturnofftheserverthroughthemanagementLANremotely.
