a.
Unsolder
the
rotor
coil
(field)
leads
from
the
solder
lugs.
b.
If
the
rotor
has
a
grease
retainer
(installed
on
all
late
production
alternators).
remove
it with
a
pair
of
diagonal
pliers.
c.
Cut
through
the
copper
of
both
slip
rings
at
opposite
points
(180
°
apart)
with
a
chisel.
d.
Break
the
insulator
and
remove
the
ring.
e.
Clean
away
any
dirt
and
all
particles
of
the
old
ring.
f.
Scrape
the
face
of
the
fan
to
be
sure
it
is
smooth.
g.
Clean
the
shaft
surface
on
the
area
that
contacts
the
inner
diameter
of
the
ring
and
also
the
ends
of
the
rotor
coil
leads.

There
are
two
types
of
slip
rings
which
can
be
installed.
The
following
instructions
will
describe
each
type.
a. Old
Style:
1.
Obtain
a
three
inch
long
piece
of
bare
wire
(approx.
18
gauge)
and
scrape
one
end
(about
0.19
of
an
inch)
clean
and
tin
this
area
with
rosin
core
solder.
2.
Lap
the
tinned
end
of
the
wire
over
the
field
coil
lead
to
the
insulated
ring
and
solder
the
two
together.
