Engine Disassembly -- All Engines
7. Using a strap or adjustable wrench to hold coupler,
and socket to hold flywheel nut, remove the flywheel
nut and washer .
8. Install flywheel puller on flywheel. Remove flywheel.
When flywheel is removed, inspect flywheel key and
keyway in flywheel for damage. Inspect keyway in
crankshaft for damage.
CAUTION:
Do not thread the puller bolts into the flywheel more than
3/8² (.95 cm) or stator damage may result. Do not tighten
the flywheel puller against the magnet holder screws or
damage to the screws or magnet holder may result.
9. Remove starter drive. A thrust washer is located on
each end. Inspect gear teeth for wear, cracks or
damage. Hold drive body and rotate drive gear to
check operation of drive assembly. The drive gear
must slide smoothly outward without binding. Inspect
bushing in starter housing as outlined on 3.49.
