Engine Mounts
Check tightness of all engine mounts including bolts that secure mounting plate to engine. Inspect rubber mounts
for cracks. Tighten or replace if necessary. Always replace engine mounts when engine is removed for service.
Compression Test
A compression test is a good indicator of engine condition. For accurate readings, use a high quality gauge and
make sure the battery is in good condition and fully charged.
WARNING
The spark plug high tension leads must be securely grounded to the engine block to prevent a spark which may
ignite fuel or fumes, causing a fire or explosion. Some models are manufactured with grounding posts mounted
to the pop--off valve / thermostat housing. Attach spark plug wires to grounding posts whenever possible.
1. Remove all spark plug high tension leads and
connect securely to ground on engine block.
2. Remove all spark plugs and install compression
gauge in cylinder to be tested.
3. Using the starter motor, turn engine over with
throttle wide open until a maximum reading is
obtained (approximately 3-5 seconds). Record
reading.
4. Repeat for the other cylinders and compare to each
other cylinder. All readings must be within 5% of
each other.
Engine Break-In
Carbureted Models: Breaking in a new engine is critical! Carbureted Polaris watercraft utilize oil injection, how-
ever, you must add oil to the fuel in the fuel tank for the first tank of fuel only. Mix Polaris Premium 2 cycle oil,
or Polaris Premium Gold Synthetic oil, or Nature Oil with the first tank of fuel at a 40:1 ratio. After the first tank
of fuel/oil mixture is gone, fill fuel tank with recommended octane fuel only. After any repair where pistons, piston
rings, cylinders, or crankshafts are replaced, the first tank of fuel must be mixed with oil in the above fashion.
DIt Models: Due to the fact that fuel is directly injected above the intake ports on DIt models, it is not necessary
to mix the first tank of fuel with oil. However, if desired, a pre--mix ratio of 40:1 can be used during the break in
period.
