Most “Cool Season” grasses do not spread
through runners, but rather from actual seed
that germinates. Cool Season varieties usually
have individual blades that grow in a vertical
orientation.

Most “Warm Season” grass varieties grow
(spread) through runners that branch out
horizontally from the established lawn or
from planted stolons. In general, Warm Season
grasses go dormant in the winter.
