COG/SOGFilter
TheCOG/SOGlteraveragesthevelocityvectorsto
compensatefortheoscillatingmotionofthevessel,
givingaclearerindicationofthevessel’scourseand
speed.
Thelterdoesnotaffectthecalculationofyour
receiver’sreportedposition.Thevelocityvectors
calculatedfromthesignalprovideaninstantaneous
measureofspeedanddirectionofthereceiver.The
COGandSOGcanthereforseemerraticunder
certainconditions.Forexample,whenavesselis
movingslowlythroughroughseas,thereceiver
movesfromsidetosideaswellasinthedirection
oftravel.
Slowmovingvessels,orvesselssailinginrough
seaswillbenetfromahighsetting,whereasa
powerboatthatcanquicklychangespeedand
directionwillbenetfromalowsetting.
