Youshouldbearinmindthatthesizeofeachon-screentargetis
affectedby:
•Thephysicalsizeofthereectingobject.
•Thematerialfromwhichtheobjectismade.Metallicsurfaces
reectsignalsbetterthannon-metallicsurfaces.
•Verticalobjectssuchascliffsreectsignalsbetterthansloping
objectssuchassandbanks.
•Highcoastlinesandmountainouscoastalregionscanbeobserved
atlongerradarranges.Therefore,therstsightoflandmaybea
mountainseveralmilesinlandfromthecoastline.Althoughthe
coastlinemaybemuchnearer,itmaynotappearontheradar
untilthevesselisclosertoshore.
•Sometargets,suchasbuoysandsmallvesselsdifculttodiscern,
becausetheydonotpresentaconsistentreectingsurfaceas
theybobandtossaboutinthewaves.Consequentlytheseechoes
tendtofadeandbrighten,andattimesdisappearmomentarily.
•Buoysandsmallvesselsresembleeachother,butvesselscan
oftenbedistinguishedbytheirmotion.
