Function Description

The core function of the POP 3D Scanner is to capture the three-dimensional shape and, optionally, the texture of objects. It achieves this through a set of depth cameras, comprising two IR sensors and one projector, which quickly obtain the 3D shape. An additional RGB camera is used to capture texture information, allowing for the generation of vivid 3D models directly. The device supports both high-precision and texture scanning modes.

The scanner's operation is managed through the "Handy Scan" software, which provides a user interface for controlling the scanning process. This software allows users to define new projects, select scan modes (Feature, Marker, Face, Body, or Dark), and choose whether to capture color data. It also enables users to input previously scanned 3D models, start or pause scanning, and stop/complete projects. Upon completion, the software can fuse point cloud data, mesh the model, apply textures, and export the final 3D model in various formats such as PLY, OBJ, and STL.

For post-processing, the "Handy Studio" software (Windows only) is available. This application allows for the modification of individual 3D models created by Handy Scan and the alignment and merging of multiple 3D models into a new, combined model. Handy Studio offers features such as converting point clouds into meshed objects, clipping model planes, filling holes, smoothing surfaces, undoing operations, generating mirror images, and exporting models.

Usage Features

The Revopoint POP 3D Scanner offers several features to enhance its usability and adaptability to different scanning scenarios:

Scan Modes: The scanner provides five distinct scan modes—Feature, Marker, Face, Body, and Dark—each optimized for specific object types and conditions. These modes primarily adjust exposure and gain settings.
- Feature Mode: Ideal for objects with unique shapes and easily identifiable features, such as sculptures.
- Marker Mode: Designed for objects with large, smooth areas or regularly repeating features that might otherwise confuse the scanner's internal pattern recognition. Users place tracking markers irregularly on or around the objects to help the scanner determine the relative location of each frame of point cloud data. It's important to ensure at least six markers are in view for each frame. Note that Marker mode is not available with Wi-Fi (Hotspot) connection due to data link speed limitations.
- Face Mode: Specifically configured for scanning human faces, with exposure and gain settings optimized for typical skin reflectivity.
- Body Mode: Used for scanning human bodies or larger objects from a greater distance, with adjusted exposure and gain.
- Dark Mode: Suitable for objects with darker surfaces, such as black clothes or boxes. However, not all dark objects can be successfully scanned, especially those that absorb or reflect too much light.
Camera Parameter Adjustment: Users can manually adjust the exposure and gain for both the color camera and IR camera to achieve optimal image quality and prevent over or underexposure. The software also offers an "Auto" setting to find the best overall exposure, which can then be locked to "Manual" to prevent continuous adjustments during scanning.
Scanning Distance Indicator: The software provides real-time feedback on the scanning distance, indicating "Too near," "Excellent," "Good," or "Too far." Maintaining an "Excellent" distance ensures the best balance of coverage and resolution. While a "Too near" distance can yield higher accuracy, it also increases the likelihood of losing tracking.
Real-time Preview: During scanning, the 3D Model preview window displays the captured data, showing current data in green and already-scanned portions in blue. This helps users monitor the progress and coverage of the scan.
Error Handling and Recovery:
- "Miss Track" Warning: If the scanner loses track, a "Miss Track" warning appears. Users are instructed to re-target the camera to a previously scanned (blue) area and hold still until tracking is re-acquired (red changes to green).
- "Too Few Points" Prompt: This indicates that the distance between the scanner and the object is either too close or too far. Users should adjust the distance until the "Excellent" indicator is highlighted.
- "Detect Plane. Need More Feature" Prompt: This occurs when a plane or object with insufficient features is scanned, preventing proper alignment of point clouds. Solutions include restarting the project in Marker mode with physical markers or pausing, undoing, completing, and exporting existing data before switching to Marker mode.
Continue Scan After Mesh: The software allows users to continue scanning an object even after the point cloud data has been meshed. This is useful if the scanning controller runs out of RAM or if holes are discovered in the scan data, enabling iterative refinement of the model.
Open a Model File to Scan Over Holes: Existing 3D model files with defects can be opened in Handy Scan, and the scanning process can be continued to fill in any missing data.
Clip Plane: This feature allows users to remove unwanted planes in the scene, such as turntables, desktops, or floors, ensuring that only the desired object data is captured.
Keyboard Shortcuts: The "Space Bar" on the computer keyboard can be used to toggle between starting and pausing a scan.

Maintenance Features

While the manual primarily focuses on operational features, some aspects touch upon maintenance and best practices:

Operating Temperature: The product has an operating temperature range of 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F). Operating within this range is crucial for proper function, as it does not meet military, industrial, or full commercial operating temperature standards.
Special Object Scanning: For transparent and highly reflective objects, the use of a 3D Scanning spray powder with optional sublimation is recommended. This helps the scanner capture data from challenging surfaces.
Outdoor Scanning: A cover is needed when scanning outdoors to avoid interference from intense light, which can disrupt the scanner's operation.
Power Supply: When connecting wirelessly to a smartphone, the POP scanner should be powered via a battery or power supply rated for a minimum of 1 amp (2 amps is better) to ensure sufficient operating current.
