Overview

The document describes the SCHUNK JGP-P 2-finger parallel gripper, an assembly and operating manual for this pneumatic gripping device.

Function Description

The JGP-P is a universal 2-finger parallel gripper designed for gripping and temporarily holding workpieces or objects. It features a high gripping force and can handle high maximum moments due to its T-slot guidance system. The gripper operates pneumatically, using compressed air for its main connections to open and close the jaws. It can be mounted from three sides (Side A, Side B, Side C) and allows for the attachment of additional structures, such as workpiece supports or gripper fingers. The gripper's movement should always be smooth, without jerks or bouncing, and sufficient reduction and/or damping must be implemented.

Variants of the JGP-P include different strokes (stroke 1 and stroke 2) and versions with gripping force maintenance for "O.D. gripping" (AS) and "I.D. gripping" (IS), which use springs to ensure a minimum clamping force even in the event of a pressure drop. The product is intended for industrial and industry-oriented use and for installation in a machine/system.

Usage Features

Installation and Connection:

  • Mounting Surface Evenness: Critical for proper function; permissible unevenness is < 0.02 mm for edge lengths < 100 mm and < 0.05 mm for edge lengths ≥ 100 mm.
  • Pneumatic Connection: Can be connected via hose-free direct connection or compressed air lines to main connections "A" (open) and "B" (close). Unused air connections must be closed. An air purge connection can be used to prevent dirt ingress.
  • Throttle Valve: Recommended for damping and throttling, especially for hose-free direct connections, to ensure smooth jaw movement.
  • Additional Structure: Workpiece-supporting structures can be attached. The locating surface of these structures must not exceed the recess of the cover, but external dimensions can exceed the gripper's as long as they don't interfere with finger operation. Centering sleeves are used for precise alignment.

Sensor Mounting: The gripper is prepared for various sensors to monitor jaw position.

  • Supported Sensors: Inductive proximity switches (IN 80), magnetic switches (MMS 22, MMS 22-PI2, MMS 22-P 22, MMS 22-PI1, MMS 22-IOL, MMS 22-A), and analog position sensors (APS-Z80, FPS, APS-M1).
  • Setting Dimensions: Specific setting dimensions (l1, l3) are provided for magnetic switches and position sensors to ensure accurate detection of "gripper open," "gripper closed," and "part gripped" positions.
  • Optimal Mode for MMS 22-PI1: SCHUNK recommends using "Optimal Mode" for setting this sensor, where the sensor identifies its optimal position in the groove itself.
  • Analog Sensor Monitoring: For some sizes (JGP-P 50, 200), the first and last 15% of the nominal stroke will not produce a change in the analog signal, meaning end positions cannot be monitored.
  • Throttle Reduction for APS-Z80 (Size 50): For the JGP-P 50, a throttle reduction (M5 - 0.8) is required at main connections "A" and "B" during the teaching process for the APS-Z80 sensor to ensure reliable operation.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues:

  • Product does not move: Check mounting surface evenness, air supply, compressed air lines, proximity switch, and flow control valve.
  • Product not executing complete stroke: Check for dirt deposits, air supply, mounting surface, and component defects.
  • Product opens/closes abruptly: Check for insufficient grease, blocked air lines, mounting surface, incorrect flow control valve adjustment, or excessive loading.
  • Product not achieving opening/closing times: Check compressed air line installation, flow rate of valve, and seals.
  • Gripping force dropping: Check seals, grease, air supply, and component defects.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance Intervals:

  • For products used at room temperature and within specified ambient/operating conditions, the grippers are maintenance-free.
  • For other conditions, specific maintenance intervals (in million cycles) are provided:
    • 40-160 / 200-300:
      • 10 / 5: Clean product, check for damage/wear.
      • 10 / 5: Replace seals (if required).
      • 10 / 5: Lubricate all grease areas.
  • Shortened Intervals: For extreme ambient and application conditions, shortened maintenance cycles are recommended to maintain lifespan.

Lubricants and Lubrication Points:

  • Metallic Sliding Surfaces:
    • JGP-P 40: microGLEIT GSV 790
    • JGP-P 50-300: Toothgood 1
  • All Seals & Cylinder Surfaces: Sealgood 1
  • Lubrication Process: Apply lubricant thinly with a lint-free cloth. For metallic sliding surfaces, use a lubrication nipple and open/close the gripper alternately during lubrication.
  • Warning: Lubricants can harden faster above 60°C, potentially damaging the product. Reduce lubrication intervals accordingly in such conditions.

Seal Replacement: Detailed instructions are provided for replacing seals for variants without gripping force maintenance and for variants with "O.D. gripping" and "I.D. gripping" force maintenance.

  • Careful Dismantling: Especially for gripping force maintenance variants, parts are under spring tension, requiring careful dismantling to prevent injury.
  • Cylinder Piston Alignment: During assembly, the cylinder piston must be precisely aligned. SCHUNK recommends having them change the seals for these variants.
  • Installation Position of Magnets: The installation position of magnets in the piston (upwards or downwards) must be observed during assembly, as it depends on the gripper size and variant.

Tightening Torques: Specific tightening torques are provided for various screws (Item 40, 41, 45, 46, 51) for different JGP-P sizes, ensuring proper assembly and preventing damage.

Spare Parts: Only original SCHUNK spare parts or authorized spares should be used. Spare parts packages, such as "Sealing kit," are available for maintenance and repair. Housing and base jaws are matched and should be exchanged as a set or sent to SCHUNK for repair.
