6 Common Service Procedures
Purging Air From Transaxle / Burnishing PTO Clutch
6 - 10
BURNISHING THE
ELECTRIC PTO CLUTCH
In order to wear evenly, new PTO clutches need to be
burnished after installation.
1. Select a safe area to operate the mower deck. With
the transmission in neutral, the PTO switch disen-
gaged, the parking brake set, and an operator in the
seat, start the tractor engine. Run the engine at full
throttle.
2. Engage the PTO switch and run the deck for fifteen
seconds. Disengage the PTO switch and wait for the
mower drive belt to stop.
3. Repeat ten times and re-check the mower blade
stopping time. Stopping time should be five seconds
or less.
PURGE AIR FROM TRANSAXLE
(Hydro-Gear 0500 / 0650 &
Tuff Torq K-56 Models Only)
Air may become trapped in the inlet hydraulic filter or
closed loop passages of the hydro transaxle during pro-
longed storage or transmission service. It is very impor-
tant for proper operation to release any trapped air that
may cause damage to the internal transaxle parts.
1. Park the tractor on a flat, level surface and block the
tires.
2. Place the hydro release lever in the “PUSH” position
by pulling rearward on the lever. See Figures 20 and
21 for transmission release lever locations.
3. Start the tractor engine and run at a low idle.
4. Fully depress the forward ground speed pedal for five
seconds. Next fully depress the reverse ground
speed control pedal for five seconds.
5. Repeat step 4 three times.
6. Stop the engine.
7. Place the hydro release lever in the “DRIVE” position
by pushing lever fully forward.
8. Start the tractor and drive at least five feet in the for-
ward and reverse directions with full throttle and full
ground speed.
9. Repeat step 8 three times.
8. Check oil level (Tuff Torq models only, see Section 3)
Repeat the above steps if tractor has noisy or erratic
operation, or lack of performance after transmission
warm-up.
