Section 4 Data Cable Connections
This section describes basic data cable connection for automotive applications.
NOTE
For motorcycle applications see, Data Cable Connection on page 44.
Connection of the data cable to the diagnostic tool and vehicle data link connector
(DLC) is required for diagnostic tool operations that require communication with the
vehicle.

4.1 Data Cable Connection (OBD-II/EOBD
Vehicles)
IMPORTANT
Only use original Snap-on data cables and accessories with your
diagnostic tool. Total data cable length must not exceed 114.17 inches
(2.9 meters).
z Basic data cable connection procedure:
For OBD-II/EOBD compliant vehicles use the supplied DA-4 data cable.
1. Connect the data cable to the diagnostic tool (Figure 4-1).

2. After identifying the vehicle using the Scanner or OBD-II/EOBD function (see
Vehicle Identification on page 21) review any on-screen information that may
be provided for data cable connection, usage and DLC location (Figure 4-2).
NOTE
On-screen cable and adapter connection instructions may be provided while
using the Scanner and OBD-II/EOBD functions. The instructions may also
include the location of the vehicle DLC.
