Partitioning and readying your PS3 for
Linux
Generic instructions for partitioning and getting ready to
install Linux
=====Things needed=====
* A PLAYSTATION 3 with a Hard Disk (20GB is fine if you can still find one)
* USB Keyboard, USB Mouse
* A USB Storage Device/Flash drive (Memory Stick, SD card,...)
* An ISO of the desired Linux distro.
*
Sony PS3 Other OS Installer
* Blank optical media + burner
* Other things which will be listed on the distro-specific pages.
=====Instructions=====
* Download the ISO of the desired Linux distro.
* Download the otheros.bld file for your respective distro. (Please check distro-specific pages for the
links/files)
* Download the
Sony PS3 Other OS Installer. It will contain a file '''otheros.self'''.
* Plug in a USB Drive into your PC.
* In the root of the USB drive, make a folder '''PS3'''. Inside the PS3 folder, make a '''otheros''' folder.
* Copy the '''otheros.bld''' and '''otheros.self''' files into the otheros folder on the USB drive. (X:\PS3
\otheros\*)
* Start the PS3 and go to Settings -> System Settings and format your Hard Disk.
* Once the Hard Disk is formatted, just click on Allot 10GB to Other OS. (Bear in mind that you can
allot more space if you have a bigger hard disk.)
* Now plug in the USB drive into the PS3 and go to Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other OS
* It will ask you to select the Other OS.
* Once you press the appropriate button, it will give you a warning. Accept it.
* You will see a black screen for a few moments. This is perfectly fine.
* Once done, you will be brought back to the PS3's Game OS.
* Go to Settings -> System Settings -> Default OS. Select Other OS from the list.
* Restart your PS3. You will be brought to the kboot prompt.
At this point, you must read the instructions for the distro which you want to install.
