Apower-onpasswordprotectsthesystemfrombeingpoweredonbyanunauthorizedperson.The
passwordmustbeenteredbeforeanoperatingsystemcanbebooted.Forhowtoremovethepower-on

Harddiskpassword
Therearetwoharddiskpasswords:
•Userharddiskpassword-fortheuser
•Masterharddiskpassword-forthesystemadministrator,whocanuseittogetaccesstotheharddisk
eveniftheuserhaschangedtheuserharddiskpassword.
Note:Therearetwomodesfortheharddiskpassword:UseronlyandMaster+User.TheMaster+User
moderequirestwoharddiskpasswords;thesystemadministratorentersbothinthesameoperation.The
systemadministratorthenprovidestheuserharddiskpasswordtothesystemuser.
Attention:Iftheuserharddiskpasswordhasbeenforgotten,checkwhetheramasterharddiskpassword
hasbeenset.Ifamasterharddiskpasswordhasbeenset,itcanbeusedtoaccesstheharddiskdrive.If
nomasterharddiskpasswordisavailable,neitherLenovonorLenovoauthorizedservicetechnicians
provideanyservicestoreseteithertheuserharddiskpasswordorthemasterharddiskpassword,or
torecoverdatafromtheharddiskdrive.Toputthesystembacktooperationalstatus,theonlyLenovo
andLenovo-authorizedservicesolutionwouldbetoreplacetheharddiskdriveorsolid-statedrivewith
ascheduledfee.

Supervisorpassword
AsupervisorpasswordprotectsthesysteminformationstoredintheThinkPadSetupprogram.Theuser
mustenterthesupervisorpasswordinordertogetaccesstotheThinkPadSetupprogramandchangethe
systemconguration.
Attention:Ifthesupervisorpasswordhasbeenforgottenandcannotbemadeavailabletotheservice
technician,thereisnoserviceproceduretoresetthepassword.Thesystemboardmustbereplacedfor
ascheduledfee.
Howtoremovethepower-onpassword
Ifnosupervisorpasswordhasbeenset,dothefollowingtoremovethepower-onpassword:
1.Disablethebuilt-inbattery.Forhowtodisablethebuiltinbattery,see“Disablingthebuilt-inbattery”
onpage60.
2.Removethebackupbattery.Forhowtoremovethebackupbattery,see“1050Keyboardbezel,backup
battery,andspeakerassembly”onpage68.
3.Connecttheacpoweradapterandturnonthecomputer.WaituntilthePOSTends.AfterthePOST
ends,thepasswordpromptdoesnotappear.Thepower-onpasswordhasbeenremoved.
4.Disablethebuilt-inbattery,andthenreinstallthebackupbattery.
Ifasupervisorpasswordhasbeensetandisknowntotheservicetechnician,dothefollowingtoremove
thepower-onpassword:
1.T urnonthecomputer.
2.WhentheThinkPadlogoisdisplayed,immediatelypressF1.
3.T ypethesupervisorpasswordtoentertheThinkPadSetupprogram.
4.SelectSecurity.
