Chapter9.RemovingorreplacingaFRU
ThischapterprovidesinstructionsonhowtoremoveorreplaceaFRU.
CRUstatementforcustomers:
Youcanresolvesomeproblemswithyourproductwithareplacementpartyoucaninstallyourself,calleda“Customer
ReplaceableUnit”or“CRU.SomeCRUsaredesignatedasself-serviceCRUsandothersaredesignatedas
optional-serviceCRUs.Installationofself-serviceCRUsisyourresponsibility.Foroptional-serviceCRUs,youcan
eitherinstalltheCRUyourselforyoucanrequestthataServiceProviderinstalltheCRUaccordingtothewarranty
serviceforyourproduct.IfyouintendoninstallingtheCRU,LenovowillshiptheCRUtoyou.CRUinformationand
replacementinstructionsareshippedwithyourproductandareavailablefromLenovoatanytimeuponrequest.
YoucanndalistofCRUsforyourproductinthisHardwareMaintenanceManual.Anelectronicversionofthis
manualcanbefoundathttp://www.lenovo.com/support.ClickUserGuides&Manualsandthenfollowthe
on-screeninstructionstondthemanualforyourproduct.Y oumightberequiredtoreturnthedefectivepartthat
isreplacedbytheCRU.Whenreturnisrequired:(1)returninstructions,aprepaidshippinglabel,andacontainer
willbeincludedwiththereplacementCRU;and(2)youmightbechargedforthereplacementCRUifLenovodoes
notreceivethedefectiveCRUwithinthirty(30)daysofyourreceiptofthereplacementCRU.SeeyourLenovo
LimitedWarrantydocumentationforfulldetails.
Generalguidelines:
WhenremovingorreplacingaFRU,besuretoobservethefollowinggeneralguidelines:
1.Donottrytoserviceanycomputerunlessyouhavebeentrainedandcertied.Anuntrainedpersonruns
theriskofdamagingparts.
2.BeforereplacinganyFRU,reviewChapter8“FRUreplacementnotices”onpage55.
3.BeginbyremovinganyFRUsthathavetoberemovedbeforereplacingthefailingFRU.SuchFRUsare
listedatthebeginningofeachFRUreplacementprocedure.Removethemintheorderinwhichthey
arelisted.
4.FollowthecorrectsequenceinthestepsforremovingaFRU,asgiveninthedrawingsbythenumbers
insquarecallouts.
5.Whenturningascrew,turnitinthedirectionasgivenbythearrowinthedrawing.
6.WhenremovingaFRU,moveitinthedirectionasgivenbythearrowinthedrawing.
7.T oputthenewFRUinplace,reversetheremovalprocedureandfollowanynotesthatpertainto
replacement.
8.WhenreplacingaFRU,usethecorrectscrewsasshowninthereplacementprocedure.

Attention:AfterreplacingaFRU,donotturnonthecomputeruntilyouhaveensuredthatallscrews,springs,
andothersmallpartsareinplaceandnonearelooseinsidethecomputer.Verifythisbyshakingthecomputer
gentlyandlisteningforrattlingsounds.Metallicpartsormetalakescancauseelectricalshortcircuits.
Attention:Thesystemboardissensitiveto,andcanbedamagedby,electrostaticdischarge.Before
touchingit,establishpersonalgroundingbytouchingagroundpointwithonehandorbyusingan
electrostaticdischarge(ESD)strap.
