5.6 Activating the BIOM for Vitreoretinal Training
Info Optional feature
The BIOM hardware mimic is an optional feature. Not every Eyesi Surgical
simulator is equipped with a BIOM.
Binocular indirect ophthalmomicroscope (BIOM)
A BIOM is a non-contact optics for vitreoretinal surgery, which compensates for the
refractive effects of the eye’s lens. The BIOM provides good vision in the periphery
as well as high magnification of the macula area. Eyesi Surgical can be equipped
with an Oculus BIOM/SDI hardware mimic, which is operated like a real BIOM. The
BIOM is mounted to the stereo microscope of Eyesi Surgical.
Stereoscopic diagonal inverter (SDI)
The BIOM delivers an inverted image of the fundus, rendering it unsuitable for vit-
reous surgery. An SDI reinverts the image obtained by the BIOM optics. It can be
activated manually with a button on the BIOM or on the microscope foot pedal.
CAUTION Possible contusions due to moving parts of the BIOM
The BIOM has movable parts that could lead to contusions, especially when
pivoting the BIOM into the optical axis of the microscope.
f When adjusting the BIOM, be careful not to pinch your fingers between
moving parts.
NOTICE
Possible damage to BIOM lens
Usually, the lens of a BIOM can be exchanged. This is not possible with the
Eyesi Surgical Simulator. Trying to do so will damage the BIOM.
f Do not try to remove or exchange the BIOM lens.
Activating the BIOM for vitreoretinal training:
1. If not already the case, pivot the BIOM into the optical axis of the microscope
while holding up the lens (ÂFig. 37 on page44, #1).
2. Release the lens (ÂFig. 37 on page44, #2).
