13.5 Connection via the USB-to-RS-485 8-Channel
Distribution Unit
TheUSB-to-RS-485distributionunitprovides8channelstoeasilyconnectandconfigurethePIRdetectorson
theXOdevice.
EachPIRdetectorneedsauniqueaddress.Fortheappropriateaddressranges,seePIR Address Rangeon
page50.Youcanusetheunit,togetherwiththeADPROPIRsoftwareonyourPC,toassignauniqueaddressto
thePIRdetector.Inthiscase,connectthedistributionunittoyourPC,andconnectonly1PIRdetectorper
channelonthedistributionunit.Fordetails,seedatasheetUSB-RS-485 distribution unit(19532060).
OnceyouhaveassigneduniqueaddressestothePIRdetectors,youcanconnectmultiplePIRdetectorstothe
samechannelonthedistributionunit,allowingyoutoconnect32PIRdetectorstoanXOdeviceusingonly
1distributionunit.Dependingontheexistinginstallation(seetherestrictionsondistancesandcablelengths
furtherbelow),youcandeterminewhichPIRdetectorsyouconnecttowhichchannel.Ifnecessary,youcan
connectupto4distributionunitsincascade.Inthatcase,youconnectonlyoneofthe4distributionunitsdirectly
totheXOdevice.
Keepthefollowinginmind:
l BeforeconnectingmultiplePIRdetectorstothesamechannel,youhavetoassignaunique address toeach
PIRdetector.
l Connectthedistributionunittothe/dev/ttyU2USBportontheXOdevice.Donotuseanyotherports.
l RestarttheXOsoftwareafterconnectingthePIRdetectorstotheUSBport.
l Onlythe485bidirectionalcommunicationofthePIRdetectorsisused,notthemechanicalPIRtampers.
l Themaximum distance betweendistributionunitandPIRdetectoris200m.Ifthedistanceislongerthan
200m,thenthePIRdetectorneedsaseparatelocalpowersupply.
l Withlocalpowersupplies,themaximum distance betweendistributionunitandPIRdetectoris1200m.
l Themaximum length oftheUSBcablebetweenthedistributionunitandtheXOdeviceis1m.
l Ifyouuseseveraldistributionunitsincascade,themaximum length ofthecablesbetweentheunitsis1m.
