The TubeSpec Lubrication System
The key to the TubeSpec’s high-quality wall-thickness readings is the compression of the packers
between the tubing and the sensors, which creates friction between the tubing and the packers, which
in turn results in drag on the tubing.
To minimize drag, a lubrication system is employed. The lubrication system has two distinct compo-
nents – the oiler assembly and the lube tank assembly.
The oiler assembly performs the task of cleaning large contaminates from the tubing, applying an even
coat of heavy oil, and catching the waste material as it falls from the tubing. The waste material is then
returned to the lube tank for filtering and recycling back to the oilers.
The lube tank assembly provides a pump to move heavy oil and automatic application controls. The
direction of the tubing dictates to which end of the measuring head oil is applied, thus preventing
excess oil from deployment on the side of the tubing where it is not required.
Oiler Assembly
An oiler assembly is located on each side of the measuring head.
Oil is applied by only one oiler assembly at any given time, depending on the direction of tubing travel.
Oil is applied by the assembly located on the side where the tubing enters the measuring head.
The oiler body employs a clamshell design. It incorporates a polyurethane scraper (number 5) for
removing excess rust and debris from the tubing exterior, and a sponge (number 3) to apply an even
coat of oil around the pipe as it enters the measuring head. A centralizing bearing (number 6) is
