The PET
has
two
character sets. The "standard" character set
has
capital (upper case) letters typed
in
unshifted mode, and the shifted mode
prints the graphie characters. The "alternate" character set gives upper
and
lower case letters but eliminates some graphie characters. If
you
have the
graphies keyboard, the standard character set
is
active whenever the
PET
is
powered
up.lf
you
have the CBM, however, the alternate character set
is
ac-
tive
on
power-up. The selection of standard or alternate character set
is
deter-
mined by the value contained in a particular system location that vou can change.
This feature
is
described in detail in Chapter
5.
For now. if
Vou
have the CSM. type
in the
following
statement:
POKE
59468.12
This activates the character set
with
graphies
on
CSM units. Unless stated
otherwise, this book assumes that the graphies character set
is
being
used.
ln the
following
key descriptions. and throughout this book. individual keys
from the keyboard are illustrated. To avoid confusion.
we
have used keys from
just
one type of keyboard - the compact keyboard. You
will
find these keys virtually
identical to the legends
on
the full size keys. Thus
Vou
should have no trouble
recognizing
which
key
is
intended
on
your full size keyboard when vou
see
the
corresponding key from the compact keyboard.
