Chapter 16 – Troubleshooting by Product Appearance
This chapter provides a guide to troubleshooting by product appearance.
Check for reliable tight, uniform undamaged closure

Conveyor height must be set up so that product is fully supported by
conveyor as it is being filled.
Push casing shirr towards skin brake during stuffing.
Ensure the skin brake ‘floats’ within the housing support. Also look for
circumstances that create an uneven drag on casing as it feeds off the
horn such as product or emulsion getting behind skin brake, loading the
shirr, and offsetting the feed of the casing through the skin brake.
For larger casing diameters, use a sizing ring whenever applicable. This
adds to the uniform tension applied to the casing as it enters the skin
brake. It also prevents excessive overlapping of casing in the skin
brake, which can cause the product to stuff at an angle through the

Check for burrs on gate and clipper die guards and remove with a file
and sandpaper.
Inspect clip for severe wipe back or shaving.
Inspect and lubricate die.
Check clips to ensure presence of wax.
Ensure the clips have not been washed down and the clips have
sufficient wax lubrication.
Check clip feed for proper operation.

Check for gaps between each of the voider pairs.
Tighten adjusting collar on movable voider pair to eliminate gap.
Increase voider opening. Too much pressure will damage collagen film.
Check product pathway for burrs or sharp points.
