5.3 Remote Heat Seal Control
Utilizing the Handshaking Signals to Remotely Control the Operation of the Heat Seal: The RS4203
clipping machine incorporates the heat seal handshaking signals to allow the operator to remotely control
the heat seal while standing at the clipping machine. The 4-Button control box located at the end of the
conveyor includes an Emergency-Stop button (for stopping the clipper ONLY), a red Cycle Stop/Start
illuminated pushbutton, a green Heat Seal Clip/Sync illuminated pushbutton, and a green Heat Seal Start
illuminated pushbutton. The function of the pushbuttons are explained below with the assumption that the
clipper and heat seal machines are both ready and idle.
Cycle Stop/Start (Red): This button is
primarily used by the clipping machine
for starting and stopping the clipper as a
stand-alone machine. However, if the
heat seal is sealing film (green HS Start
& HS Clip/Sync lights are ON) and this
button is pushed, the heat seal will be
stopped. If the heat seal is synced with
the clipper and this button is pushed, the
clipping machine will perform a cycle-
stop. After the current piece is finished,
the clipping machine will stop and turn
OFF the Clipper Ready Signal, which
then stops the heat seal machine.
Heat Seal Start (Green): If the heat seal
is idle (both the green Start and
Clip/Sync lights are OFF) and this button
is pressed, the heat seal will start
sealing film. Once the heat seal is
sealing film, the green lights will
illuminate. If the heat seal is sealing film
(green lights ON) and this button is
pressed, the heat seal will turn ON the
Start/Enable Clipper signal and start the
fill/clip process.
As an alternative to pressing the HS Start button twice to sync with the clipper (i.e. once to start sealing
and once to sync), press and hold the HS Start button until the green lights come ON, then release the
button. Once the heat seal has synced with the clipper, pushing this button will perform an Auto-Stop
(Cycle) which is the same as pressing the [Auto-Stop] button on the heat seal’s touchscreen. After the
clipper finishes the current piece, both the heat seal and the clipper will stop. If this button is pressed
again before the Auto-Stop (Cycle) is complete, then an Auto-Stop (Immediate) is executed, and both the
heat seal and clipping machines will stop immediately without finishing the current piece.
Heat Seal Clip/Sync (Green): If the heat seal is idle (green lights OFF) and this button is pushed, the
clipper will perform a manual clip operation. If the heat seal is sealing film (green lights ON) and this
button is pressed, the heat seal will continue sealing film until it has sealed an amount of film equal to the
amount specified by the ‘Target Buffer Size’ setting in the heat seal. The ‘Target Buffer Size’ can be
adjusted on the heat seal’s “Recipe” and “Setup” screens. Once the heat seal seals the amount of film
specified by the target buffer setting, the heat seal will execute the sync-with-clipper function and start the
clipping machine. Pressing this button while synced with the clipper has no effect.
