Appendix B—Protection
Thermal Overload
The S611 soft starter features an electronic motor overload
protection feature. This is intended to protect the motor and
power wiring against overheating caused by excessive
current for extended periods of time.
Note: Short-circuit protection must be applied on the line
side of the soft starter.
Enter the motor full load current rating, using the Overld Trip
FLA parameter to program the trip current. It is
programmable from 50–100% of the unit’s rated current.
Overload—Adjustment Range
WARNING
Setting the Overload Trip Class parameter to OFF
disables this feature resulting in no thermal overload
protection for the motor.
The thermal overload is designed to protect the motor from
overheating caused by excessive current. If the motor is
overloaded, the current drawn rises and heats the motor. The
FLA sets the trip threshold and the trip class (OFF, 5 0 30) is
set with the Ovrld Trip Class parameter.
If the device is shut down when the overload fault is tripped,
the temperature is also saved to the non-volatile memory. If
the device is left to cool and then powered, the temperature
read from the sensor is compared to the saved temperature.
If the current temperature is 87% or less of the saved
temperature, a full thermal memory reset is initiated.
