Overview

The Ecolab Fluid Warmer (EFW5L) is a medical device designed to warm and maintain the temperature of surgical solutions prior to their use. It is intended for use by healthcare professionals and is not to be used for direct patient contact, as a blood warmer, tissue bath, or patient bath. The device is designed to be used with single-use Ecolab Scope Warmer Pillow Drapes (EPD400/EPD400N).

Usage Features:

  • Power Connection: The EFW5L is a dual voltage system, compatible with 120 VAC or 230 VAC 50/60 Hz power sources. The power cord connects to the unit's power inlet, securing with an audible click, and then to a wall outlet.
  • Temperature Control System: The basin heater controls allow users to set a temperature between 20°C and 49°C (68°F and 120°F). The temperature scale can be set to either Celsius or Fahrenheit. The device requires a minimum of 1.0 liters of fluid in the basin to operate the heater safely.
  • Controller Display: The home screen displays the current fluid temperature (red font, upper display) and the set point temperature (green font, lower display). Indicators below the set point temperature provide information on the heater pad and sensor states.
    • "1" (red font) indicates the heater pad state: on, flashing (approaching set point), or off (reached set point).
    • "2" (red font) indicates the secondary sensor state: operating within range, flashing (approaching limit), or "Alarm 2" flashing (exceeded 60°C/140°F).
    • "5" (red font) indicates the drape state: displayed (Ecolab drape detected), or not displayed (drape not installed, incorrectly installed, or expired).
  • Set Point Adjustment: The "+" and "–" buttons allow users to increase or decrease the set point temperature in 1-degree increments. Holding these buttons adjusts the temperature by more than 1 degree at a time. The display flashes green to confirm acceptance of the new set point.
  • Set Point Locking/Unlocking: The set point temperature can be locked to prevent unauthorized adjustments. When locked, temperature scale, password enable, and set point temperature range features are also locked. Unlocking requires navigating through the "Factory" and "Lock 1" submenus and setting "Write Security" to "5".
  • Password Protection: A password can be enabled to secure settings changes. If enabled, the unit prompts for the password before allowing adjustments. The unit must be restarted after enabling the password.
  • Touchpad Sensitivity: Users can adjust the touchpad sensitivity (Low, Less Than, Factory, Greater Than, High) via the "Operations" menu.
  • Height Adjustment: The EFW5L features an adjustable column. Users can lock the wheels, remove the height adjustment pin, slide the column to the desired height, and reinsert the pin until it clicks into place.
  • Mobility: The unit has three wheels, three of which are lockable. Wheels should be unlocked before moving the unit and locked once it is in position. Fluid must be removed from the basin before moving.
  • Warnings:
    • "Attention! Alarm 1: High" flashes if the current fluid temperature exceeds the set point by 2°C (4°F) or more.
    • "Attention! Alarm 2: High" flashes if the basin temperature exceeds 60°C (140°F), shutting off the heater until it cools.
    • "Drape Unit" displays if a valid EPD400 drape is not detected or has expired.

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Cleaning (After Each Use):
    • Allow the basin to cool completely (approx. 5 minutes).
    • Clean and dry the basin with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
    • Avoid scratching the basin.
    • Ensure the basin is completely clean and dry for the next use.
    • Inspect the power cord for wear or abuse. If noted, contact customer service for replacement.
  • Monthly Maintenance:
    • Clean the EFW5L with a non-abrasive cleanser and lint-free cloth to prevent corrosion or staining from condensation.
    • Inspect the power cord for any unusual signs of wear or abuse. If noted, contact customer service for replacement.
  • Fuse Replacement:
    • Unplug and disconnect the power cord.
    • Use a flat-head screwdriver to unscrew and pull out the Fuse Holders.
    • Remove old fuses and insert proper replacement fuses (T5.0AL, 250VAC for 120VAC; T3.15AL, 250VAC for 230VAC).
    • Insert Fuse Holders into CoreTemp and secure with a screwdriver.
  • Temperature Verification (Every Five Years):
    • Requires an EPD400 or EPD400N Drape, a calibrated Fluke 51II Digital Thermometer (or equivalent), and a Shrouded 6" long Type T Thermocouple Probe.
    • Install a drape, add 1 liter of saline or water, and turn on the EFW5L, allowing it to heat for one hour.
    • Place the thermocouple probe tip into the fluid (without contacting the drape) approximately 0.635 cm (0.25 in) above the center of the basin.
    • The temperature indicated by the calibrated thermometer should be at Set Point ± 1.5°C (2.5°F). If outside this range, contact customer service.
