TheinformationinthefollowingsectionsisimportanttounderstandA2switchoperation
andinstallationsinastackinstallation.
About SecureStack A2 Switch Operation in a Stack
TheSecureStackA2productsarestackablesw i tchesthatcanbeadaptedandscaledto
helpmeetyournetworkneeds.Theseswitchesprovideamanagementplatformand
uplinktoanetworkbackboneforastackedgroupofuptoeightA2switches.
Onceinstalledinastack,theswitchesbehaveandperform
asasingleswitch.Assuch,
youcanstartwithasingleswitchandaddmoreswitchesasyournetworkexpands.You
canalsomixdifferentproductsinthesamefamilyinasinglestacktoprovideadesired
combinationofporttypesandfunctionstomatchtherequirementsof
individual
applications.Inallcases,astackofswitchesperformsasonelargeproduct,andis
managedasasinglenetworkentity.
Whenswitchesareinstalled andconnectedasdescribedbackinConnectingStacking
Cablesonpage 37,thefollowingoccursduringinitialization:
•Theswitchthatwillmanagethestackis
automaticall yestablishedandisreferredtoas
theManagerswitch.
•AllotherswitchesareestablishedasMemberswitchesinthestack.
•Thehierarchyoftheswitchesthatwillassumethefunctionofbackupmanagerisalso
determinedincasethecurrentmanagermalfunctions,ispowereddown,oris
disconnectedfromthe
stack.
•TheConsoleportonthemanagerswitchremainsactiveforoutofband(local)switch
management,buttheConsoleportoneachmemberswitchisdeactivated.This
enablesyoutosettheIPaddressandsystempasswordusingasingleConsoleport.
Noweachswitchcanbeconfiguredlocally
usingonlythemanagersConsoleport,or
inbandusingaremotedeviceandtheCLIsetofcommandsdescribedinthissection.

ConnectingtoConsolePortforLocalManagementonpage 314.
Onceastack
iscreated(morethanoneswitch isinterconnected),thefollowingoccurs:
1. Switch(unit)IDsarearbitrarilyassignedonafirstcome,firstservedbasis.
2. SwitchIDsaresavedagainsteachmodule.Then,everytimeaboardispowercycled,
itwillinitializewiththesameswitchID.Thisisimportantforport
specific
information(forexample:fe.4.12isthe12thFastEthernetportonswitchnumber 4).
