4.7 Joystick Controls
A joystick control system is an option on some
engine installations with electronic steering. The
joystick can only be used at slow speeds. It is
engaged by moving the shift and throttle controls
to the neutral position and pressing the JOYSTICK
button on the base of the joystick control or the
keypad on the main engine controls. Once acti-
vated, the boat moves in the direction the joystick
is pushed with the engine speed increasing the
further the stick is pushed, up to preset limits.
Turning the knob on the top of the joystick rotates
the boat in the direction the knob is turned. An-
other button on the joystick or engine control key
pad raises the preset engine speed for maneuver-
ing in high winds and/or strong tides.
When the joystick is released, it automatically
returns to center, the engines shift to neutral,
rotate to the straight ahead position, and the
engine speed is reduced to idle. It is deactivated
by pressing the JOYSTICK button at the base of
the joystick or control keypad or by moving the
shift and throttle control levers.
Both engines must be running for the joystick
control to maneuver boat properly.
Always refer to the engine manufacturer owner’s
manuals for specic information on the operation
and maintenance for the joystick and steering
control systems on your boat.

SOME JOYSTICKS AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEMS
ARE EQUIPPED WITH A FEATURE WHICH USES THE ENGINES
TO AUTOMATICALLY HOLD THE BOAT IN POSITION. THIS
FEATURE CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO
PERSONS SWIMMING NEAR THE BOAT OR ATTEMPTING
TO BOARD WHEN IT IS ACTIVATED.
WHEN THE POSITION HOLDING FEATURE IS ACTIVATED:
THE PROPELLERS ROTATE AUTOMATICALLY;
PROPELLER ROTATION MAY NOT BE OBVIOUS;
THE BOAT MAY SUDDENLY MOVE IN ANY DIRECTION;
THE PROPELLERS CAN INJURE PEOPLE IN THE WATER
ANYWHERE AROUND THE BOAT.
IF YOUR BOAT IS EQUIPPED WITH A POSITION HOLDING
FEATURE, THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS APPLY:
ALWAYS ASK THE CAPTAIN BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER.
UNLESS THE CAPTAIN GIVES YOU PERMISSION:
DO NOT GO IN THE WATER; WIND OR WATER CURRENT CAN
MOVE SWIMMERS INTO THE PROPELLERS.
DO NOT SIT OR STAND WHERE YOU COULD FALL
OVERBOARD; YOU MAY LOSE YOUR BALANCE IF THE BOAT
MOVES SUDDENLY.
