SECTION 3
SYSTEM PLANNING
With a passive fueling system there is much more to consider than the basic FMU connections to
power, dispenser pulse and control, and Central Controller communications. For an FMU-3500 to
turn on a fueling hose when the nozzle is inserted into the vehicles filler neck, two additional
communications functions must perform satisfactorily. First, the nozzle tag must communicate with
the filler neck ring to initiate a transaction and, secondly, the AIM2™ module must communicate with
the FMU to activate the transaction.
NOTE
A vehicle/equipment listing is requested from new customers planning AIM2™ installations. Syn-Tech
Systems will review the listing and select the nozzle tags, filler neck rings, and connecting cables
required to outfit the vehicles and equipment items.
System planning involves the following considerations:
1. Review of the “Fundamental Do’s/Don’ts” which follow these considerations;
2. Developing a database of vehicle records for each vehicle/equipment item receiving AIM2™;
3. Selection of the correct nozzle tag;
4. Selection of a filler neck ring compatible with the vehicle and nozzle tag;
5. Selection of the proper length RFID Extension Cable to connect between the RFID Interface
Module and AIM2™;
6. Selection of the correct interfacing cables to connect the AIM2™ module to the vehicle OBD,
analog speed sensor, and/or analog chronometer;
7. Examination of the vehicles/equipment items receiving AIM2™ to determine if external
antennas will be required; and
8. Selection of a suitable mounting location for the FMU where it can communicate to all the
passive-equipped vehicles fueling through it. If such a location is not available, are there
locations available for mounting external FMU antennas?
Insufficient consideration of any one of these functions will return poor performance from the passive
fueling system.
Fundamental Do’s/Don’ts
There are fundamental key points which must be considered for installation success. Follow these
crucial Do’s/Don’ts closely when planning your AIM2™ installation:
Don’ts
Don’t mount the FMU/FRB antenna in a kiosk. RF transmission will be blocked, or range will be
greatly reduced. If the FMU is already installed in a kiosk, install FMU external antennas so the
vehicle/equipment can communicate to the FMU with direct line-of-sight.
