STEERING WHEEL PLAY
1. From its straight-ahead (neutral) position, turn
the steering wheel clockwise and counterclock-
wise to the point where a resistance is first felt
for each direction, and measure the amount of
the steering wheel movement between these
points (steering wheel play).
Note: On vehicles equipped with power steer-
ing, the above check must be performed
with the engine running.
2. Try moving steering wheel up and down and
also right and left to check for excessive loose-
ness.
STEERING WHEEL LOOSENESS
Grasp the steering wheel and move it up and
down, forward and backward, and to right and
left to check for looseness.
STEERING WHEEL OPERATING CONDI-
TION
While driving slowly, make sure that the steering
wheel is free from shake and the vehicle does
not pull to one side. Also check for excessive
operating resistance and unsmooth return to the
neutral position.
