14. FAN-BELT
An excessively slack or tight belt could cause an
improperly charged battery, malfunction of the alter-
nator or water pump. Always keep belts adjusted to
the proper tension.
CAUTION
Prevent the belt from any contact with oil or
grease during check and adjustment.
CHECK
1. Open engine inspection ports (at engine and at
pressure cap).
2. Open the belt inspection panel on the passenger
side (of a left hand drive vehicle) , or driver
side (of a right hand drive vehicle) . Roll back
the carpet flap, loosen the screw on the
inspection lid and remove the inspection lid.
3. Press the belt center with your finger [at a force
of about 98 N (10 kgf)] and inspect the amount
of deflection.
4. Press the belt at the center with your finger. If
the deflection is within the range given in the fol-
lowing table, the belt is at proper tension.
Fan-belt inspection intervals
At the time of pre-operational check and every 5,000 km
(3,000 miles)
NVI: 5,000 km (3,000 miles)
WARNING
Be sure to stop the engine before inspecting
the fan belt. If the engine was running and
your hands, clothes, or other items touched
or came into close proximity to the engine’s
rotating parts, they could be dragged into the
mechanism, resulting in injuries.
If you must unavoidably perform an inspec-
tion with the engine running, do not on any
account touch the fan or any other rotating
part.
