The two POTS ports on the ONU (GPON terminal) can be adopted to implement the
VoIP service. The VoIP service is implemented through the built-in IAD of the ONU.
The IAD is an integrated access device specially for the VoIP service. After being
transmitted to the IAD, the analog voice signals are sampled and converted into the
digital signals through the built-in codec chip. Then, the digital signals are transmitted to
the central processing chip for the DSP compression. After the compression, the signals,
in the form of the RTP packets, are transmitted to the IP network.
The IAD, supporting the MGCP protocol, exchanges signaling with the softswitch and
thus implements the VoIP service. The OLT in a GPON network does not process the
VoIP service, but provides the transparent transmission channel.
