6 Text Recognition
6.1 General Description
The text recognition tool is a useful aid to read printed text on objects in your environment. The
StellarTrek device is equipped with a camera system and an Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
tool that allows to read text with high precision.
There are two different types of features using the OCR tool: the Quick reading feature and the
Detailed reading tool.
Note: do not use the StellarTrek to read and validate critical or sensitive information, such as Drug
prescriptions or legal documents.
6.2 Quick Reading
The StellarTrek device allows to quickly detect and read text on an object close to you. This can be
useful, for example, if you wish to detect and read text on a bus sign or a computer screen, or in
activities like sorting out your mail.
To detect and read text on an object:
1. Press and hold the Up arrow to enter Detection mode.
2. Use the Left and Right arrows to navigate through the menu and choose the item Quick
reading by pressing the Confirm button. The device will announce “Camera Ready”.
3. Point the camera towards an object containing text that you wish to read.
4. A camera shutter sound will be heard, indicating that an image of the text has been
captured.
5. The StellarTrek will read the detected text.
6. When the reading of the text block is done, the device will take a new picture and read the
text again. This will be repeated until you press the Back button.
7. If you wish to change the reading voice, press and hold the Left arrow.
6.3 Detailed Reading
If the Quick reading feature does not render the printed text with enough clarity, it is possible to do
a detailed reading of a piece of text with the Detailed Reading tool of the StellarTrek. This is useful
to read complex documents, such as a label on a food product or a printed letter.
To read detailed text:
1. Press and hold the Up Arrow to enter Detection mode.
2. Use the Left and Right Arrows to navigate through the menu and choose the item Detailed
reading by pressing the Confirm button.
3. The StellarTrek announces “Camera ready”.
4. Point the camera towards an object containing text that you wish to read.
5. The StellarTrek will guide you with directional hints (i.e., “Move up”, “Move down”, “Move
left”, “Move right”, “Move farther”, “Move closer”) to align more precisely the camera with
the text. If no text is detected, the StellarTrek will simply announce “Nothing was found”.
6. When the camera is aligned with the text with a satisfying precision, the device will
announce: “Stop moving, taking picture”. A double beep will be heard, followed by a
camera shutter sound, indicating that an image of the text has been captured.
7. The StellarTrek will read the detected text. If you wish to hear the text again, press the
Voice button.
