Recovering the BIOS code
If the BIOS code has become damaged, such as from a power failure during an
update, you can recover the BIOS code using the boot block jumper and a BIOS
update diskette.
Notes:
1. You can obtain a BIOS update diskette from one of the following sources:
v Download the BIOS code update from the World Wide Web and use it to
make a update diskette.
v Contact your IBM service representative.
2. To create and use a diskette, you must add an optional external diskette drive to
the server.
To download the BIOS code update from the World Wide Web, complete the
following steps.
Note: Changes are made periodically to the IBM Web site. The actual procedure
might vary slightly from what is described in this document.
1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.
2. Under Product support, click System x.
3. Under Popular links, click Software and device drivers.
4. Click IBM System x3550 to display the matrix of downloadable files for the
server.
5. Download the latest BIOS code update.
6. Create the BIOS update diskette, following the instructions that come with the
update file that you downloaded.
The flash memory of the server consists of a primary page and a backup page. The
backup page is a protected area that cannot be overwritten. If the primary page
becomes corrupted, the server boots from the backup page, which enables you to
replace the BIOS code for the primary page.
To recover the BIOS code and restore the server operation to the primary page,
complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the server, and disconnect all power cords and external cables.
2. Remove the server cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 42 for more
information.
3. Locate the boot block recovery jumper block (J14) on the system board.
