CUTTING UNITS

Step Cutting
NOTE: Arrow indicates direction of travel.
Step cutting occurs when grass is cut taller on one side of
a reel than the other or one cutting unit to another. This is
usually caused by mechanical wear or an incorrect roller
or HOC (height-of-cut) adjustment.
Probable Cause Remedy
HOC (height-of-cut) settings are different from one side of a reel
to the other or from one cutting unit to another.
Check HOC adjustment of cutting units. (Refer to “Safety,
Operation, and Maintenance Manual.”)
Worn front roller bearings. Check/replace front roller bearings. (See “Front Roller” on
page 8-42.)
Reel-to-bedknife contact is different from one side of the cutting
unit to the other or from one cutting unit to another.
Check reel-to-bedknife contact. (Refer to “Safety, Operation, and
Maintenance Manual.”)
Cutting reel movement is restricted. Check/remove cutting reel movement obstruction.
Variations in turf density. Change mowing direction.
Machine weight distribution is uneven. Check/adjust tire inflation pressure. (Refer to “Safety, Operation,
and Maintenance Manual.”)
Cutting unit weight distribution is uneven. Check/adjust for even mower weight distribution. (See “Weight
Transfer Circuit” on page 4-57.)
