Precautions
When
performing
any
inspection
or
main-
tenance
work
on
your
vehicle,
always
exercise
care
to
reduce
the
risk
of
person-
al
injury
or
damage
of
the
vehicle.
Here
are
some
general
precautions
that
should
be
closely
observed
in
carrying
out
any
service
operation.
e
Do
not
work
on
the
engine
while
it
is
hot.
Always
turn
it
off
and
allow
it
to
cool.
If
you
must
work
with
the
engine
run-
ning,
make
sure
that
no
article.of
cloth-
ing,
including
ties
and
handkerchiefs,
can
become
entangled
by
any
moving
parts.
Remove
watches,
bracelet,
rings,
necklaces,
and
similar
items.
Keep
hands,
clothing,
hair,
and
tools
away
from
moving
fans
and
drive
belts.
e
Never
get
under
the
vehicle
while
it
is
supported
by
a
jack.
If
it
is
necessary
to
work
under
the
vehicle,
use
safety
stands.
e
Keep
smoking
materials,
flames,
and
sparks
away
from
the
battery
and
all
fuel
and
fuel-related
parts.

Never
connect
or
disconnect
either
the
battery
or
any
transistorized
compo-
nent
while
the
ignition
switch
is
ON.
e
When
connecting
the
battery
cables,
pay
special
attention
to
their
polarities.
never
connect
a
positive
cable
to
a
negative
terminal
or
a
negative
cable
to
a
positive
terminal.
e
Remember
that
the
battery,
ignition
cables
and
vehicle
wiring
carry
high
currents
or
voltage.
Be
careful
not
to
cause
a
short
circuit.
e
When
performing
any
checks
in
an
enclosed
space
with
the
engine
run-
ning
such
as
in
a
garage,
be
sure
there
is
proper
ventilation.
You
should
be
aware
that
improper
or
incomplete
service
may
result
in
operation
problems.
This
section
gives
instruction
only
for
those
items
that
are
easy
for
a
owner
to
perform.
As
explained
in
Scheduled
Maintenance,
several
items
must
be
done
by
a
qualified
service
tech-
nician
with
special
tools.
Improper
perfor-
mance
of
owner
maintenance
during
the
warranty
period
may
affect
the
warranty
coverage.
Read
the
separate
Kia
Warranty
statement
for
details.
If
in
doubt
about
any
service
operation,
have
it
done
by
an
authorized
Kia
Dealer.
WARNING!
e
Do
not
release
the
bonnet
latch
unless
the
ignition
switch
Is
first
turned
off,
the
shift
lever
is
placed
in
1(First)
and
the
park-
ing
brake
is
firmly
set.
e
If
It
necessary
to
check
beneath
the
bonnet
with
the
engine
run-
ning,
place
the
shift
lever
in
NEUTRAL
and
the
parking
brake
firmly.
Unexpected
and
possibly
sudden
vehicle
movement
may
occur
if
these
precautions
are
not
taken.
e
To
avoid
the
possibility
of
per-
sonal
Injury
,
you
should
always
turn
off
the
ignition
switch
and
remove
the
key
before
working
under
the
bonnet
unless
the
procedure
specifically
requires
other
wise.
