•Ifyouwanttosetahot-sparedriverightaftertheconguration,selectObjects➙PhysicalDrive
fromtheprogrammaininterface.Then,selecttheharddiskdrivethatyouwanttosetasahot-spare
driveandpressEnter.Asubmenuisdisplayed.SelectMakeHotSparefromthesubmenu,andthen
selectYeswhenpromptedtosettheharddiskdriveasahot-sparedrive.
Rebuildingaphysicaldrive
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDConguration
UtilityprogramwhenaphysicaldriveinaRAIDarrayfails.
WhenaphysicaldriveinaRAIDarrayfails,youcanrebuildthedrivebyrecreatingthedatathatwasstored
onthedrivebeforeitfails.Ifthedriveisnotoperational,itmustbereplacedandthedataonthefailingdrive
mustberebuiltonanewdrivetorestorethesystemtofaulttolerance.
TheRAIDcontrollerrecreatesthedatausingthedatastoredonotherdrivesinthedrivegroup.Rebuilding
canbedoneonlyindrivegroupswithdataredundancy,suchasRAID1,RAID5,andRAID10arrays.For
detailedinformationaboutdiskrebuild,referto“IntroductiontoRAID”intheMegaRAIDSASSoftwareUser
GuideonthedocumentationDVDthatcomeswithyourserver.
TorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogramwhenaphysicaldrive
inaRAIDarrayfails,dothefollowing:

Therebuildrateisthepercentageofthecomputingcyclesdedicatedtorebuildingfailingdrives.Therebuild
ratecanbeconguredbetween0percentand100percent.At0percent,therebuildisdoneonlyifthesystem
isnotdoinganythingelse.At100percent,therebuildhasahigherprioritythananyothersystemactivity.

Runningaconsistencycheck
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtorunaconsistencycheckforvirtualdrivesusingtheLSISoftware
RAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.
TheconsistencycheckoperationveriesthatallstripesonavirtualdrivewitharedundantRAIDlevel(RAID
1,RAID5,andRAID10)areconsistentandthedateonthevirtualdriveiscorrect.Forexample,inasystem
withparity,checkingconsistencymeanscomputingthedataononedriveandcomparingtheresultsto
thecontentsoftheparitydrive.
Youshouldrunaconsistencycheckonfault-tolerantvirtualdrivesperiodically.Itisrecommendedthatyou
runaconsistencycheckatleastonceamonth.Youmustrunaconsistencycheckifyoususpectthatthe
virtualdrivedatamightbecorrupted.Ensurethatyoubackupthedatabeforerunningaconsistencycheck
ifyoususpectthatthedatamightbecorrupted.
