Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Attention:Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeen
removedfromtheserverandyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,
canseriouslydamageservercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandleserverpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,itisrecommendedtowearanelectrostatic
discharge(ESD)wriststrap,ifoneisavailable.EnsurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponents(suchasPCIcards,memorymodules,system
boards,andmicroprocessors)byedgesorframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleandpossiblydamagethedevice.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartoftheserverforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitintheserverwithout
placingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecificsituation,placethe
static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton
thestatic-protectivepackage.
•Donotplacethepartontheservercoverorothermetalsurface.
•Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
Systemreliabilityguidelines
Tohelpensurepropercoolingandsystemreliability,strictlyfollowtheseguidelines:
•AlldrivebaysandPCIcardslotsareeitheroccupiedbydrivesandcardsorcoveredbyelectromagnetic
interface(EMI)protectivepanelsorEMIshields.WhenyouinstallaninternaldriveoraPCIcard,save
theEMIshieldordummytrayfromthedrivebayorsavethePCIcardslotbracketincaseyoulater
removethedevice.
Attention:AnunoccupieddrivebayorPCIcardslotwithoutacover,shield,dummytray,filler,or
anyotherprotectionmightimpacttheEMIintegrityandcoolingoftheserver,whichmightresultin
overheatingorcomponentdamage.
•Leaveadequatespacearoundtheservertoensurethattheservercoolingsystemworkswell.Leave
approximately50mm(2inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearoftheserver.Donotplace
objectsinfrontofthefans.
