CHAPTER 5
HANDPIECES
5.1 General
This chapter contains information on handpiece types, handpiece assembly, and handpiece testing for
the SonaStar.
One procedural pack, which includes a titanium tip, irrigation/aspiration tubing, silicone sleeve, O-rings
and wire stylet is required to be sterile for the procedure. In addition, the handpiece and handpiece tip
assembly set must be cleaned and sterilized. The handpiece tip assembly set includes a counter wrench
and a torque wrench to properly tighten the tip onto the handpiece. Prior to use in surgery, the
HANDPIECE MUST BE STERILIZED. For handpiece sterilization, steam autoclave methods may be
used. See Section 8.3 for sterilization parameters.
5.2 Handpiece Types
Two handpiece configurations are available for use with the SonaStar to accommodate different
surgical needs. The handpiece types and their model numbers are listed below:

Caution It is strongly advised that a sterile backup handpiece be readily available in the operating
room as insurance against any contamination or malfunction of the handpiece during
surgery.
