7.2 Preparing the System for Monopolar COAG Use
Consult the user manual supplied with the electrosurgery unit for operating instructions, safety guidelines,
and setup. To enable monopolar COAG through the handpiece, perform the following steps (Refer to Figure
7-2):
1. Plug the appropriate umbilical cable (Refer to Table 7-1) into the umbilical connector on back of the
SonaStar console. See Figure 4-6, Item 11.
2. Plug the other end of the umbilical cable into the footswitch connector of the electrosurgical
generator. On the Force2 generator, attach the cable to the footswitch connector marked
“Monopolar Footswitch” in the back of the unit, as shown in Figure 7-3. Other units connect in a
similar manner; consult documentation supplied with these umbilical cables.

3. The sterile person will plug the sterile, Single-Use Monopolar Handpiece Cable’s small, socket end
onto the electrosurgery pin receptacle in the rear cap of the handpiece, as shown in Figure 7-4 on the
next page. The cable may be secured to the tubeset using the clips supplied with the
aspiration/irrigation tubeset. The sterile person should then pass the other end of the cable to the
non-sterile person for connection to the electrosurgical generator as described in the next step.
Warning Connect the cable to the generator only while it is in the “OFF” or “STANDBY” mode.
Failure to do so may result in injury or electrical shock to the patient or operating
room personnel.
