Instructions for Use SonaStar Ultrasonic Surgical Aspiration System
IFU-601 Rev T March 2023 Page 46 of 73
Warning Inadvertent or improper foot pedal depression can cause possible injury to the patient,
surgeon, or operating room staff, and can cause product damage. Place foot pedal where it
is highly visible, and labels can be clearly seen.
12. If required, connect the remote IR receiver cable to the corresponding receptacle at the
console rear. Place the remote IR receiver on the floor in direct line of sight to the wireless
footswitch.
13. The unit is now ready to be turned on and tested.
6.4 System Setup
1. Having positioned the SonaStar as desired in the O.R., plug the power cord into a hospital grade
electrical outlet.
2. Turn the power on by pressing the power ON switch. The Setup LED will begin flashing. At
this stage, make sure that the handpiece tip (probe) is free from contact with any object
and that the irrigation/aspiration tubing is not tangled or kinked. Make sure the “LOW
BATTERY” LED on top of console is not illuminated.
NOTE If illuminated, replace batteries (3 X AA) before continuing set up.
Place footswitch where typically positioned during procedure. Have another staff member
depress any pedal or button function, while you are observing the blue blinking footswitch
activation LED on top of the console.
NOTE If the footswitch’s activation LED does not illuminate, plug the Remote IR receiver into its
receptacle at the console rear and place it within direct line of sight with the footswitch.
The Remote IR receiver can be moved closer to the wireless footswitch or linked directly to
it to improve signal reception as needed.
Warning During vibration testing, make sure the tip of the handpiece is free from contact with any
object. Allowing contact with the tip may result in damage and/or personal injury.
Caution Never operate the handpiece without proper irrigation. Irreparable damage to the
handpiece and probe may result if adequate irrigation i
s not provided to the probe tip.
3. It is recommended to either hold the handpiece or lay it on its side during setup making sure the
probe is free from contact. Depress the flush button to prime the irrigation tubing until fluid is
observed at the probe tip. This may take about 60 seconds.
4. Press the Setup key to initiate vibration system testing to the handpiece. During this check, the
vibration display will ramp up to approximately 25% and back down to 0%. Once testing is
completed, an audio tone will beep and the Setup key LED will begin flashing again. If there is
any fault condition, the FAULT status indicator will illuminate and an error code will appear in
the digital display. If an error code occurs, see the Troubleshooting chapter of this manual for
more information on error codes.
Tip: If there is a high pitched squealing noise, after pressing the Setup key turn the power switch off and
check that the tip is torqued properly. If it was, there may not have been adequate irrigation fluid at
the tip. Turn the unit back on and depress the flush pedal again making certain there is irrigation at
the tip, then press the Setup key.
