Instructions for Use SonaStar Ultrasonic Surgical Aspiration System
IFU-601 Rev T March 2023 Page 47 of 73
5. Press the Setup key again to initiate aspiration and irrigation system testing. During this check,
the aspiration and irrigation displays will ramp up to 100% and back down to 0%. Once these
tests reach completion the system will automatically flush the irrigation tubing by running the
irrigation pump at maximum speed. An automatic final check tests all three systems
simultaneously with the aspiration, irrigation and vibration running.
Setup is complete when the audio tone beeps and the Setup LED extinguishes. The system is
now in Standby. In Standby mode irrigation continues to flow for an additional two minutes at
2cc/min.
Note The pinch valve should be checked for proper operation by activating Flush. If irrigation
flow is immediately aspirated prior to reaching the operative site, proper tubing routing
and pinch valve operation should be checked.
6. Select the desired levels for irrigation (yellow), aspiration (green) and vibration (blue) on the
front panel. Levels are adjusted by pressing the appropriate up/down keys. Minimum levels of
30% for irrigation (approx. 3cc/min) and 30% for aspiration (approx. 7" or 180mm Hg) are
recommended. Be sure to increase the irrigation setting when increasing the vibration setting.
Caution Never operate the handpiece without proper irrigation. Irreparable damage to the
handpiece and probe may result if adequate irrigation is not provided to the probe tip.
7. To enable vibration, the system must be taken out of Standby, by pressing either the Preset or
Linear key. In Preset mode, depressing the footswitch will activate vibration automatically to
the level selected on the vibration display. In Linear mode, footswitch depression will vary the
vibration level in proportion to how far the pedal is depressed, up to the maximum selected
level. Audio alert tone is heard when the footswitch is depressed, with tone level corresponding
to vibration level.
Warning Once vibration is enabled by pressing either the Preset or Linear key, depressing the
footswitch will initiate vibration. Make sure that the handpiece is properly positioned at
the tissue site before the footswitch is depressed. Any inadvertent activation of the
footswitch will initiate vibration. DO NOT TOUCH tip while activated.
