7.3 Using Monopolar COAG with the SonaStar XSE
Refer to the user manual supplied with the electrosurgical generator for all settings, conventions, and
safety guidelines. Setup the electrosurgical generator interface with the footswitch as per the previous
section. Setup, use, and post-operative care of the footswitch may be found in relevant sections of this
manual.
1. To use the COAG feature, the COAG button atop the footswitch may be depressed for COAG only
operation, or the VIBRATION + COAG pedal on the right-hand side of the footswitch may be
depressed for simultaneous operation.
2. Misonix recommends staying within the limits prescribed by the electrosurgical generator’s user
manual for the type of procedure being performed, up to a maximum of 70. Generally, the lowest
setting that proves effective for the procedure being performed should be used.
Caution Electrosurgery units approved for use with this unit are listed in Section 7.1. Any electrosurgery units
used with this system should be operated at settings lower than 70. Failure to maintain the
electrosurgery signal at settings below 70 can induce permanent system damage.
3. During COAG use, either alone or in conjunction with VIBRATION, irrigation will flow to the tip at
approximately 20 cc/min. This is done for two reasons:
Cooling of the tip during use.
Maintaining a clean needle surface to reduce eschar buildup.
Warning Saline leakage through handpiece housing can cause a hazard when electrosurgery is energized.
Always make sure the handpiece housing parts are properly assembled, with mating parts firmly in
