Instructions for Use SonaStar Ultrasonic Surgical Aspiration System
IFU-601 Rev T March 2023 Page 48 of 73
6.5 Operative Use
For operative use involving electrosurgery, refer to Chapter 7.
Caution Simultaneous use of a standard monopolar device with ultrasound can create sparking and
possible tip damage.
Caution Vibrating tip contact with hard objects can cause tip damage.
Once system setup has been completed, the SonaStar is ready for use by the surgeon. During
operation, the vibration, irrigation and aspiration levels may all be adjusted through their corresponding
up/down keys.
The system may be placed in Standby at any time by canceling (repressing) the Preset or Linear key in
operation at the time. This will be indicated by the deactivation of its corresponding LED indicator. To
switch modes from linear to preset or vice versa, simply press the mode key desired.
The digital display indicates the accumulated time for which vibration has been activated since system
power-on. The time clock resets whenever the system is powered off.
If a FAULT condition occurs during the operation of the Ultrasonic Aspirator, the vibration will
automatically deactivate. An error code will be displayed along with the fault indicator light and an
audio fault indicator. Remove the handpiece from the surgical site and refer to the troubleshooting
chapter to diagnose and correct the fault. To reset the system after correcting the fault, press either the
Preset or Linear key.
Caution If fault occurs, suspend operation of handpiece and unit. Determine the cause of the
problem and its solution by consulting the troubleshooting section of thi
s manual.
To prevent clogging of the aspiration lines, it is recommended periodically to briefly immerse the tip in
sterile solution to clear the tubing. If a clog does occur, a sterile wire tip can be inserted into the distal
end of the tip to dislodge the clog.
Warning Never activate Vibration or electrosurgery while using the cleaning stylet. Tip damage and
operator, patient
, or staff injury may result.
Caution Electrosurgery units approved for use with this unit are listed in Section 7.1. Any
electrosurgery units used with this system should be operated at settings lower than 70.
Failure to maintain the electrosurgery signal at settings below 70 can induce permanent
system damage.
Caution Use of a separate monopolar instrument at electrosurgery settings greater than 70 while
simultaneously touching the handpiece probe to tissue can induce faults and possible
system damage
.
Limits for Airborne Acoustic Exposure*
Distance of the Tip
to Patient’s or Operator’s Ear
Maximum Exposure to Ultrasonically Active Probe
or Tip Within a 24 hour Period
3”-24” 7.6 cm – 60 cm Not to exceed 32 minutes
>24” > 60 cm Not to exceed 455 minutes
*Note: In the event the distance of the Patient’s or Operator’s ear is less than 3” (7.6 cm) or the exposure time at a given
distance is greater than the limit specified, hearing protection is recommended.
6.6 Post-Operative Procedure
To prepare the SonaStar for storage after surgery, perform the following procedures:
1. Immediately after use, the sterile person should immerse the tip of the handpiece in 100cc of sterile
