6.3 Preparing the SonaStar for Use:
1. Connect the IV administration set to the last segment of the yellow striped irrigation tubing. Be
sure to leave protective cap on the end of the IV spike.
2. Cap off all unused ports on the suction canister except the "Vacuum” port and
"Patient” or “Tandem” port, whichever is being used.
Tip: Failure to cap off all unused ports (except for the "Vacuum" and "Patient" or “Tandem” ports and to
provide air-tight connections may cause a vacuum leak which can result in error code E4.
3. Place the suction canister into its holder on the console and securely connect the adapter on the
vacuum hose to the "vacuum" port on top of the suction canister.
Caution The "Vacuum" port of the suction canister should contain a positive shut off float. The
aspiration pump connection should be made only to the vacuum port to prevent overflow
4. Extend the IV pole and hook the IV bag onto it.
Note The IV pole should be positioned to yield continuous flow and visibility, but elevated IV bag
position is not necessary to achieve flow.
5. Connect the handpiece cable plug into the handpiece receptacle, located on the right side of
the unit refer to Figure 4-1, by aligning the red dots of the plug and receptacle.
6. Connect the aspiration cuff end of the silicone aspiration tubing from the handpiece to the
“Patient” port or “Tandem”
port on the top of the suction canister. Cap all unused ports.
Leaving sufficient slack on the tubing, route it through the tissue release valve by pulling taut
that section of the tubing and insert into the pinch valve.
Caution Aspiration pinch valve and irrigation pump can create pinch points. Keep fingers away from
these parts while operating unit. Use caution when assembling
Tip: When assembling aspiration tubing, be sure there are no kinks or blockages along the entire tubing’s
length. Be sure the cuff end of the aspiration tubing is not deformed at its connection to the patient
port on the aspiration canister.
7. Connect the vacuum line from the vacuum filter on the console to the vacuum port on the
aspiration canister.
8. Open the irrigation pump gate by pressing the lever on top of the gate at the right hand side.
See figure 6-1.
