The following types of flash control are supported when a CPU lens is used in combination
with the built in flash or optional SB 400, SB 800, or SB600 Speedlights.
• i-TTLBalancedFill-Flashfor DigitalSIR:Flash output is adjusted for a natural balance between
the main subject and the background.
• Standardi-TT/Fill-Flash for Digital SIR: Flash output is adjusted for the main subject; the
brightness of the background is not taken into account. Recommended for use with
exposurs compensation, for shots in which the main subject is emphasized at the
expense of background details, or when using an S£ series 17,28, or 29 sync cable.
Standard i_L flash control is used with spot metering or when selected with the optional
Speedlight. i_TL balanced fill flash for digital SLRis used in all other cases.

Supported Standards
• DCFVersion2,0: The Design Rule for Camera File Systems (DCF) is a standard widely used in
the digital camera industry to ensure compatibility among different makes of camera.
• DPOF:Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) is an industry wide standard that allows pictures
to be printed from print or_.tersstored on the memory card.
• Exifversion2.21:The D40 supports Exif (Exchangeable Image File Format for Digital Still
Cameras) version 2.21, a standard in which information stored with photographs is used
for optimal color reproduction when the images are output on Exi_compliant printers.
• PictBridge:A standard developed through cooperation with the digital camera and printer
industries, allowing photographs to be output directly to a printer without first transfer
ring them to a computer.
