1.For direct-vent appliances, mechanical-vent heating
appliancesordomestichotwaterequipment,wherethe
bottomoftheventterminalandtheairintakeisinstalled
belowfourfeetabovegradethefollowingrequirements
mustbesatised:
a.)Acarbonmonoxide(CO)detectorandalarmshallbe
placedoneachoorlevelwheretherearebedrooms.
The detectorshall complywith NFPA 720 (2005
Edition)andbemountedinthelivingareaoutside
thebedroom(s).
b.)A(CO)detectorshallbelocatedintheroomthat
housestheapplianceorequipmentandshall:
•Bepoweredbythesameelectricalcircuitasthe
applianceorequipment.Onlyoneserviceswitch
shallpowertheapplianceandthe(CO)detector;
•Havebatteryback-uppower;
•MeetANSI/UL2034Standardsandcomplywith
NFPA720(2005Edition);andApprovedandlisted
byaNationallyRecognizedTestingLaboratoryas
recognizedunder527CMR.
c.)AProduct-approvedventterminalmustbeused,
andifapplicable,aproduct-approvedairintakemust
beused.Installationshallbeinstrictcompliance
with the manufacturer’s instructions. A copy of
the installation instructions shall remain with the
appliance or equipment at the completion of the
installation.
d.)Ametalorplasticidenticationplateshallbemounted
attheexteriorofthebuilding,4feetdirectlyabove
thelocationofventterminal.Theplateshallbeof
sufcientsize,easilyreadfromadistanceofeight
feetaway,andread“GasVentDirectlyBelow”.

beused.Installationshallbeinstrictcompliance
with the manufacturer’s instructions. A copy of
the installation instructions shall remain with the
appliance or equipment at the completion of the
installation.
